In a world filled with uncertainty, rejection, and suffering, Jesus Christ lived with unwavering purpose, compassion, and peace. Despite enduring the worst of humanity’s cruelty and betrayal, He was never overcome by despair. Instead, He exemplified perfect strength and steadfast hope. How did He remain so resilient and joyful, even to the end? The answer lies in the principles He lived by—principles He invites us to embrace today. Through His own words in Scripture, we discover the foundation of a life marked by purpose, love, and trust in the Father’s will.
Rest For His Soul In The Presence of His Father
Jesus constantly spent time in prayer, often retreating to quiet places to speak with the Father (Luke 5:16). This wasn’t just occasional; it was the foundation of His life, giving Him strength and direction.
"And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed" (Mark 1:35). Jesus knew that in all things, strength was from above, as He said, "I can of mine own self do nothing" (John 5:30). In the presence of the Father, He found rest for His soul, and there drew the strength needed to fulfill His purpose.
A Settled Mind / A Specific Focus: His Father's Will
Jesus had a clear understanding of His mission. Knowing His purpose helped Him stay focused, even when criticized, misunderstood, or betrayed.
His purpose was set, "to seek and to save that which was lost" (Luke 19:10). And though He faced opposition and sorrow, He remained steadfast, for He came not to be served, but to serve: "The Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45).
A Genuine Heart for Others: Full of Compassion and Love
Jesus lived out of genuine love, showing compassion even to those who hurt or opposed Him. His focus on love allowed Him to bear the failings of others with grace and patience. Jesus consistently put others' needs above His own. This focus on serving others created a life marked by joy and fulfillment, even amidst trials (Mark 10:45).
"And when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd" (Matthew 9:36). Even on the cross, He prayed for His oppressors, saying, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34). Love and compassion were the marks of His ministry; in these, He lived, healed, and forgave.
Living Fully In The Moment, With An Eye On Eternity
Jesus was fully engaged in each moment, not weighed down by the future or the past. He responded to each person and situation uniquely, without worrying about the critique of others.
"Take therefore no thought for the morrow," He taught, "for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself" (Matthew 6:34). Living fully in each moment, He trusted the Father’s plan, even unto death, saying, "Not my will, but thine, be done" (Luke 22:42). And because He trusted in the Father, He endured the cross, despising the shame, knowing that the path would lead to glory.
Trust In God's Sovereignty / Faith In God
Jesus fully trusted the Father’s plan, even when it led to suffering and sacrifice (Matthew 26:39). His unwavering trust allowed Him to endure the cross, knowing that God’s purposes would prevail. He constantly encouraged men to have in God: Mark 11:22 - And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. He also lived a life of faith in God as an example to us.
Jesus’ life is an invitation to rest in God’s strength, to love unconditionally, and to live each moment with purpose and peace. His example teaches us that true resilience comes from surrendering to God’s will and the knowledge that we are deeply loved by the Father. As He promised, "My peace I give unto you" (John 14:27). By following His way, we too can find strength in times of weakness, comfort in times of sorrow, and hope that endures beyond any hardship. Let us, therefore, learn from the One who overcame the world and, in His steps, find rest in our souls.
For us, these principles remind us that faith, love, purpose, and a reliance on God’s strength and wisdom can anchor our lives, helping us face challenges with grace. Following Jesus’ example involves a deep commitment to these principles and a surrender to God’s leading, allowing us to navigate life’s difficulties with resilience and hope.
Jesus Christ invites us to follow in this way, saying, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls" (Matthew 11:28-29).
"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid" (John 14:27).
